The Koppenberg

A short moment after Skibby had got going again in 1987, Vanderaerden, Kelly and Steve Bauer showed their rivals exactly how to climb The Koppenberg, opening quite a gap by the top, and leaving the rest of the peloton to climb the hill on foot... In the background can be seen the orange Hitachi jersey of Claude Criquelion, who got across to Kelly's group after the hill then went on to attack in the last 5-kilometres of the race...this is the last time the hill was used, and Criquelion is now the directeur-sportif of two of this year's race favourites, Andre Tchmil and Peter Van Petegem....
