| Jesper Skibby topples to the ground on The Koppenberg in 1987, having been unable to keep momentum on the steep hill. He had been in a long escape, which is why the commissaire's car is behind him, believing Skibby would make it over the climb before the peloton got to him... Sadly, the commissaire was wrong, and the car-driver had to sacrifice Skibby's wheel in order to get around him, as stopping on this hill with the race right behind him was not an option....it came within a whisker of crushing Skibby's foot! Following
this incident, the Tour of Flanders organizers made the decision to remove the
climb from the race route, and this series of images have become a classic set
for Graham. To
commemorate the reinstatement of this historic climb, we have produced
The Koppenberg poster. |
